Mark Warren began his college career at UGA as an art major with a desire to bring back the illustrated novel, an all but forgotten American tradition that inspired him in his childhood. His favorite artists were N. C. Wyeth and son, Andrew. After changing his major to pre-med, Mark eventually returned to his roots deeply embedded in nature and pursued a lifetime dedication to environmental education. After serving twelve years as naturalist for the Georgia Conservancy, he later founded his own business, the nationally renowned Medicine Bow Wilderness School, where he teaches the “primitive” skills of the Native Americans. But Mark continued his work as an artist, sometimes illustrating professionally for local organization’s needs (such as maps, logos and brochures), and he also created all the artwork for his own series of books, “Secrets of the Forest.” In the tradition of the Native American “Winter Count,” each year he produces a pen and ink drawing – a rendering of the year’s most salient event in his life.
Due to a number of requests, we have made some of Mark’s artwork available to the public.
“Prayer to the Nine Directions” belongs to no particular religion or culture. It belongs to everyone. Each of the directions provides a path for introspection and gratitude for the many gifts that the Earth provides. The development of this prayer was inspired by Native American mindfulness and reverence toward nature. It fits an 11 X 17 frame, and is priced at $8.00
Note: If you order all four of the “Secrets of the Forest” books, you will automatically receive this poster for free.
This depiction of the “Fremont Streetfight” – which would be memorialized as the “’Gunfight at the OK Corral” – is rendered in a sepia tone. This is, arguably, the most famous shootout in Western history, largely because it is one of the rare occasions when antagonists faced one another Hollywood-style – without guns drawn – before the tension snapped and bullets flew. The Earp brothers, Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan, along with Doc Holliday face off against the Clanton and McLaury brothers. Since 1954, Mark has drawn probably a thousand versions of this famous fight. Here’s his latest. This poster also fits an 11 X 17 frame, and is priced at $8.00
Note: If you order all three of the Earp books, you will automatically receive this poster for free.
